St Maurice

On June 17th 1944 a forward scouting party of the American 9th Division, ran into a German ambush at this spot. The Germans outnumbered and out gunned the Americans, and the men of the 9th retreated. Four of their number lay dead and a fifth was to die from his wounds some days later. The ceremony here remembered the events of that day in 1944. A large group of walkers then followed the route taken by the Americans to Barneville on June 18th 1944.
Guest of honour at the event was Leo Jereb, a veteran of the 4th Division who landed on Utah beach with the second wave of troops, on June 6th 1944.
