The Americans and British realised that they had to secure the two flanks of the beachhead before the landings could take place.

The eastern flank, near Ste Mere Eglise was taken by the paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Parachute Infantry Regiments

The western sector was initially secured by the Ox and Bucks led by Major John Howard who arrived in Normandy by glider.
