29th Division Part Two
Chateau de Vouilly
The chateau, now a hotel was used by the American press corps for much of the
battle of Normandy. It was here that Gen. Bradley gave a briefing to the press
on operation Cobra.

Carrefour des Vignes aux Gendres
The battle here did not start well as the Americans took a wrong turn and ended
up some miles from their objective. Exhaused by the distance covered during the
past few days the 115th rested near this crossroads. Discovered by chance by a
German column, which included armoured vehicles, guns and bicycles.

Saint Clair sur L'Elle
On the main road just outside the village is a monument to the 29th

Saint Jean de Savigny
Near the village is a wall of remembrance to their men of the 29th who fell in
this area.
Around 30% of the the soldiers of the 29th in the area were either killed or
injured during the conflict in which the Germans fired 3,000 shells.
One of the men commemorated on the wall is Captain Norval Carter, who was a
surgeon with the 115th. He should have been to the rear in a field hospital, but
instead requested to be at the front with his men. He was killed tending a
wounded soldier who recovered. Capt Carter's story is told in the film "Letters"
shown in the visitors centre at the American Cemetery.
