1st Special Engineer Brigade Monument Utah Beach Inaugurated on 6th June 1945 by Colonel Caffery who was the commanding officer of that brigade a year before. Legend has it that there are two bottles of Calvados in a bucket inside the monument. This is I think was the first permanent monument to be erected in Normandy In the tradition of the British Army the monument is placed on a captured enemy position, in this case the ammunition bunker that served the cannon behind the monument, it also served as Caffery's headquarters on D-day. |
